After years of hard work and ensuing success, Mitzi Perdue offers unique and poignant insights to leaders and readers around the world through her biography of Frank Perdue, who revolutionized the chicken industry. Frank Perdue did chores as a child so young he needed two hands to hold a single egg. But from these humblest of beginnings, he built an empire that today spans the globe. Due to his intuitive sense of the market, there is hardly a person over the age of twenty-five who doesn’t know the tagline, “It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken.” Frank Perdue was an extremely thoughtful and thorough businessman. He studied every possible angle of business strategy, getting advice from every possible source, before making an important decision. This is his story, and also a personal story regarding the bond between Frank and Mitzi Perdue. A true case of love at first sight – they were engaged within 24 hours of their first date – and a remarkable partnership. The rich combination of Frank Perdue's life and career and the lessons he imparts, along with Mitzi’s journalistic talents, allow this book to resonate on multiple levels – as a biography, as a business book, and as the tale of a one-of-a-kind American entrepreneur.

I don't care if you're a Fortune 500 CEO or a student thinking about starting their first business, this book will change the way you think about more aspects of what REALLY makes the difference between success and failure in business than you can begin to imagine.

Seriously? From a biography of a guy who sold chickens? How can that be?

Before I explain this rather bold statement, I think it's only fair to point out the one HUGE bone I have to pick with the author. I lost almost an entire day's worth of work when I decided to "skim" the book with my morning coffee. 6 hours later I forced myself to "get back to work," but did so with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration. In other words, more than a fair trade.

Now to answer your very reasonable question: How can a book about the "Chicken Guy" change the way I think about business?

Simple. The author had both what may be the most unique kind of access AND the background and experience to know how to translate it into meaningful lessons for both business and life.

In a nutshell the wife of arguably one the most successful entrepreneurs of the 20th century, took notes for 17 years of not just her husband's business dealings (often literally under the table), but how he built a 2 man operation into a global company, while literally revolutionizing both his industry and how his product was perceived. Add to this Mrs. Perdue's life-long fascination and study of the "secrets to success" (begun by watching her father create and build Sheraton Hotels), and you have a recipe for a revealing what really matters and makes a difference in every aspect of running a business.

The result?

A remarkably entertaining read, not just in the details of how to lead and motivate your people (while running a business rooted in trust and quality), but in the sense and spirit that it leaves you with of how much better a way this is not to just run a business, but to lead your life.

I hope this help move this book onto your "must read" list, but for the sake of both the current and next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs (who can use all the inspiration they can get these days), I really hope that you'll be inspired as I've been to make sure that more people (especially young people) hear about it.

In fact, I can only imagine what would happen if THIS was the message taught in business schools across the country. In an age where young people are increasingly questioning (often for good reason) the leaders they should be looking up to in every sphere of life, this is a message that can't possibly be spread enough.

Tough Man Tender Chicken Business and Life Lessons from Frank Perdue Mitzi Perdue 9780990757412 Books Reviews

A fascinating business book that doubles as a detailed biography presented with the charm and insights of Frank Perdue's widow, Mitzi, who is a former rice farmer. Her knowledge of farming and chicken growing in rural America is remarkable, yet it has a strong corporate overtones about branding, finance, and logistics perhaps derived from Mitzi's family background as a scion of the Sheraton chain. The marketing assault on Manhattan many years ago is a case history in logistics and branded marketing. I loved the anecdotes and humor and Frank's remarkable caring nature towards hard working employees who had to endure phone calls in the middle of the night if they had earned Frank's trust and admiration! This attention extended far beyond the executive suite... to people in the field, such as soy and chicken growers. All had a personal relation with the "tough and tender" boss who was a fortress of integrity to his people and to his family. Alain Palmieri 9/13/2005, NY, NH & Fl
This book is about business and life lessons of Frank Perdue. It is an adventure about to happen for anyone seeking inspiration in their life. His lovely wife , Mitzi Perdue, is the author, but Franks character is conveyed mostly through interviews of hundreds of people who worked for the company including some who left. It is this non-biased approach to learning about a pro and how a business grows in production, marketing, advertising and reliability that Mitzi portrays. Perdue was rarely comfortable and predictable. Yet, the fact that he was more often marvelous, adventuresome, stubborn and unsettling makes the reader want to know more. We see how Perdue's world is not just turned upside down but transformed through each stage of his companies growth. The reader is impressed that Mr. Perdue remains mistakenly entrenched in former business habits even after his business has been invaded by size and complexity. He learns to adapt to change, but often the hard way. With over a hundred lessons spelled out in the book the reader may learn on a personal level anywhere improvement is needed. For me, "Be willing to go outside your comfort zone" challenges me. I had been content and secure and comfortable in a Bed & Breakfast type of world. Mitzi's book has helped me cultivate a new passion for success. "Tough Man, Tender Chicken" is a portrait of an adventuresome career mindset that we can all afford to emulate. The price of the paperback through , including overnight shipping, was only $26. The ISBN is 978-0-9907574-1-2
